pre trip ramblings about Hawaii

It’s that time of year again … my birthday vacation.  Each year we make it a point to go away for my birthday.  Previous destinations included Prince Edward Island, Florida and my personal favourite Las Vegas.  This year is a bit different.  I am turning … wait … 40.  We figured that we should go someplace special for this big birthday.  We thought long and hard and decided on Hawaii.

Where I work, you accumulate vacation days each month.  Usually as soon as I have accumulated 5 days, we go somewhere.  Once we decided that we wanted to go to Hawaii for 2 weeks, I did some math and realized that if I wanted to spend 2 weeks in Hawaii, I would have to give up a vacation or two before now.  Let’s just say that I went through vacation withdrawal.

We spent lots of time surfing the internet and reading guidebooks to come up with a truly special birthday vacation.

Here is our iternary:

Saturday June 3 – fly from Toronto at 11am and landing in Vancouver at 12:57pm.  We have a 3-1/2 hour layover before leaving for Honolulu, Oahu.  We are scheduled to arrive there  at 7:30pm local time.  We are staying at the Ilima Hotel.

Wednesday June 7 – fly to the Big Island.  We are staying at the Kona Tiki Hotel.  This place has no phones and no televisions in the rooms.  We’ll see how I do with that.

Saturday June 10 – fly to Maui.  We are staying at the Kealia Resort.

Saturday June 17 – fly home.  We are very lucky that our flight does not leave until midnight … so we have the entire day on the island.  We are stopping once again in Vancouver and should be arriving home at 5:30pm local time.

I decided that I would try something different on this trip.  Blogging while on vacation.  Usually when I get back from a trip, it takes me quite a long time to get my pictures posted along with the story.  I thought why not document the trip as it goes.  I hope that you will check back to see what we have been doing in Hawaii.

Aloha.
