A Maui mugging

Because this is the latest we have ever been on Maui in December, we are trying to maximize our whale watching. Therefore we booked trip #4 with Ultimate Whale Watch ($52.08 USD / person including taxes and discount) for 9:05am today. Originally we were supposed to be flying home today until we extended our trip. This was supposed to be our last whale watch but lucky for us, we have one more booked.

Our captain was Joel and our naturalist was Heather. We did see quite a few whales today but the best part was the maui mugging. That is when a whale swims under your boat. There is a rule where you need to remain one hundred yards away from a whale. But if the whale approaches you, you are to stop and stay put. And that is what happened to us. The whale was coming towards us so Joel, shut down the boat and we watched it swim towards us and then right under us. We tried to get GoPro footage but I don’t think we were quick enough. Each trip has been different which is nice.

Lots of action

After our tour, we stopped at Whalers Village for some final Christmas shopping. We walked past the entrance to Hula Grill and thought why don’t we have lunch there. They are known for something called a Hula Pie. What is that you ask .. well … it is a made with macadamia nut ice cream piled high on a chocolate cookie crust and topped with whip cream and chocolate fudge and more macadamia nuts. We each ordered a kids cheeseburger so that we could have pie. So glad we did.

Best for sharing

It was an afternoon of lounging by the pool back at the condo. It was nice to have the sun back after a couple of grey days. Dinner ended up being each family BBQ’ing something and then we all sat poolside and ate. Another great day on Maui.
