We have only one full day in Jasper so we needed to make the most of it. I started looking out the windows around 6:30am to see if there were any elk but there were none. At around 7:50am, Karen says she is going outside to get pictures of the sunrise. I decided to go as well. We are walking around getting some pictures when we thought let’s go see if there are any elk at Jasper House Bungalows. When we stayed there in July, we would see elk every morning. So we drove over but there were none. But on the way back to the cabin, a bull elk came across the road in front of us. Great start to the day.
Our big activity for today was a boat cruise at 12:15pm on Maligne Lake which surprisingly sits at the end of Maligne Lake Road. This is another of those roads in Jasper National Park that is full of beautiful scenery and if you are lucky, wildlife. The only stops that we made were for wildlife (mama and baby moose) and Medicine Lake. There were other places that we said we would stop at on our way back.
Maligne Lake Cruise’s Classic Cruise ($75 CAD / person) takes you fourteen kilometers down Maligne Lake where you will see majestic mountain peaks and glaciers. It also includes a fifteen stop at Spirit Island. During the tour, our guide Nat gave us so much information about the lake and the surrounding area. We all thoroughly enjoyed the boat ride.
On our way back to Jasper, we did manage to stop at some of the places we missed on the way down like Maligne Canyon. We even got lucky with the wildlife including a male moose and elk walking across the Athabasca River at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.
We got back into town and had dinner at Karouzos before heading out for some final wildlife spotting. We struck out on the road to Patricia and Pyramid Lakes. But just as we turned onto the road for the Jasper Tramway, there were two bull elks locking horns. What a great way to end the day.
