Upcountry

Boy do I hate time changes.  The combination of the long day yesterday and the six hour time difference, our bodies were having a hard time adjusting.  We decided to take it easy today.  We started the morning with a quick trip to Costco.  You know how crazy Costco is at home on the weekend.  Well it was one hundred times worse here in Maui.  The general rule of thumb is the first stop you make after leaving the airport is Costco to pick up supplies.   We quickly ran in and picked up a couple of beach towels and headed upcountry.

The Maui Up Country 4H Livestock and Agricultural Fair was being held in Makawo and we decided to check it out.  What a great way to spend the afternoon.  One of the events that we were anxious to see was the popsicle eating contest.  The best part was watching the contestants experience the brain freeze.  We wandered over to food alley where there was a fine selection of local Hawaiian cuisine … fresh fruit smoothies, BBQ pork, malasadas and various plate lunches.  But there was also the typical fair food of fries, cotton candy and kettle corn.  We each grabbed some lunch and headed over to the grandstand to enjoy a rodeo.  All of the contestants in the rodeo are working cowboys (paniolos).  There are many farms in upcountry Maui.  We saw a couple of events … the calf roping and sheep riding by the little kids.

Our next stop for the day was Tedeschi Winery to pick up some Maui Splash wine.  We did get sidetracked on the way to the vineyard at Kula Country Farms where we went strawberry picking.  We headed back to the condo to enjoy a late afternoon nap poolside.

We deicded to have dinner at Coconut’s Fish Cafe in Kihei where we enjoyed their world famous fish tacos.  We knew the place had to be good by the line up.  After dinner, we ended our evening with a trip to the Shops at Wailea.

I think the older our bodies get, the harder the time change adjustment is! It is really hard when you get home. At least in Maui, you WANT to get up and do things & not sleep. I slept for 17 hours straight when I got home from Maui! There’s no incentive to get up esp. if you’re just going to work! Enjoy Maui! Tell Karen to read her FB chat that I sent about turtles at Ho’okipa.
