Upcountry

We had no real definite plans today so we started our day by just taking it easy and lounging around the condo.  We decided we wanted to go upcountry so we packed up the car and began our journey.  Since we left close to noon, we stopped in at Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop to pick up lunch.  We found a great little spot right on the water and enjoyed our sandwiches along with hand cut fries with garlic aioli.

After our picnic, we got back in the car and headed to Makawao.  It took us about an hour and it was beautiful drive up the slope of Haleakala.  Makawao is known is in the part of Maui that’s known for agriculture and ranch land … it’s a cowboy town.  The first stop in Makawao is at T Komodo Store and Bakery.  The store has been around since 1916 and the interior looks like it.  But they are known for their fabulous cream puffs.  Unfortunately since we got there later in the day, the cream puffs were gone.  We had to settle for the donut sticks which were just as good.  We checked out the various funky shops and managed even to pick up a few things.

We headed next to Tedeschi Winery at Ulupalakua Ranch.  We got lucky because we arrived just ahead of the two tour buses.  This was a quick stop just to pick up a bottle of Maui Splash.

We looked at the clock and realized that we wouldn’t be making it back in time for sunset.  So now we had to figure out what to do for dinner.  Karen remembered that at the same plaza as the Fish Market Maui was a guy who had an outdoor pizza kitchen,  We stopped and picked up a Hawaiian Pizza which we enjoyed on the lanai accompanied by the sound of the crashing waves below.  We were going to head out and do some more shopping but we decided we would just stay in and have a soak in the hot tub.  What a way to end the day.
