Back to reality for us today. Unfortunately we were not able to get on the same flight as Dave, Cathy and the boys. Their Air Canada flight was just after lunch while our Flair Airlines ($113 CAD / person including taxes and fees) flight was not until 4:20pm. We met them downstairs to have one final breakfast together. Michael and Liam were sad that the vacation was coming to an end. We decided to drop off Cathy and the boys at the airport while Dave dropped the rental car off. We then went and picked up Dave and took him to the airport.
We did not have to check out until noon so we finished up our packing and then went down to the pool to relax. While we were lounging around, Karen has this idea that maybe we should ask the front desk if we could just stay by the pool until we had to leave for the airport. I went inside to ask and they said it would not be a problem. So I went off to pick up lunch from Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers and we were able to have a leisurely lunch.
Since the drop off worked well this morning, we did the same thing. I took Karen to the airport with all the luggage while I went and returned the rental car. This plan worked out well since Karen was able to get herself checked in. While I was working my way back to the airport, Karen was standing in line again with my bag and just as I walked in, I was practically the next person in line to check in. We will have to remember this strategy in the future. My bag was slightly overweight (24.2 kg) but I got lucky and did not need to take anything out.
After getting through security and taking the tram to the D gates, we still had over an hour before boarding would begin. I even managed to turn $1 USD into $5 USD with a couple of pulls on a slot machine. Karen and I did not get seats together but each of us only had one other person in our row.
The flight seemed to go by relatively quickly and we arrived in Toronto at 11:52pm. The first thing that happened was that we did not taxi directly to the gate. The pilot announced that we could not get to the gate because there was no ground crew. She came back on about ten minutes later and said they found some ground crew but that there were luggage carts in the way so we had to wait for that. About ten minutes after that announcement, she tells us that the airport is busy and they can only let off fifty people at a time every three minutes. In total, it took us just over an hour from the time we landed until we were outside waiting for an Uber to take us to Ross and Susie’s house. On the drive home, we started talking about how much easier it is to fly from our Region of Waterloo International Airport. And that maybe even though the flight is more expensive, it may be worth it for the time and aggravation.
Thanks to Karen, Dave, Cathy, Michael and Liam for a great vacation. It sure was nice being able to travel internationally again.
