The next part of the adventure

Today we had to leave our home away from home for the past week.  We enjoyed one final buffet breakfast before having to leave the ms Eurodam.  I left the ship at 8:10am and I was catching the shuttle bus to the Fort Lauderdale Airport by 8:30am.  I picked up our Toyota Venza from Enterprise ($80.61 US/day) and headed back to Port Everglades to pick up Nana, Papa and Karen.  It took them even less time than it did for me.

We are spending the final days of our vacation back in West Palm Beach since Nana’s cousin has a condo there.  We headed to our hotel the Homewood Suites by Hilton West Palm Beach so that we could drop off our luggage.  I went to check in and they informed me that they had no wheelchair accessible room available.  Are you kidding me?  I had booked these rooms months in advance.  I asked to speak to someone in charge to see what could be done.  The assistant manager said that a guest had extended their stay and that he could not remove them from the room.   We indicated that we had a reservation for that specific room and that since they knew the room was booked, they should have been looking for alternatives.

The assistant manager left to start working on a solution and in the meantime, Karen and I got our laptops out and started calling other hotels.  We found the Hampton Inn West Palm Beach Florida Turnpike that had rooms available but it was about fifteen minutes away.  The manager by this time said that there was two possible solutions … a guest would give up their smoking handicap room for a couple of days or they would pay for our first night at the Hampton Inn.  We decided to go with option #2.  The moral of the story is that a hotel reservation does not mean anything.

On our way to the hotel, we stopped and had lunch at Panera Bread before checking into the hotel.  Papa had a quick nap while Nana, Karen and I lounged around the pool.  After Papa got up, we went over to Nana’s cousin Stan’s condo on Singer Island where we spent the rest of the day visiting.
