Standin’ on the corner in Winslow Arizona

It was another early day today.  I got up (4:30am) and just before I headed into the shower, Karen saw on TV that all of the balloon fiesta events were cancelled because of the rain.  That means an extra 4 hours of sleep.  Yippee!

Once we finally got moving, we went over to the Village Inn for breakfast before heading out on the road.  We are on our way to spend six days in Sedona, Arizona.  We were lucky to come across a Cracker Barrel (on Maloney Ave in Gallup, NM) so we picked up lunch to eat in the car.  The homestyle chicken was as big as Karen’s head.  We did make one detour, we stopped off at the Standin’ On The Corner Park in Winslow, Arizona.  This is the place made famous in the Eagles’ song “Take It Easy”.

The drive in total was approximately six hours and most of it with beautiful scenery.  The road from Flagstaff south to Sedona is all windy roads through the mountains, with lots of trees and Oak Creek running through it.  When we drove into Sedona, it reminded me of Banff.  It’s completely surrounded by huge red rocks.

We checked into  The Matterhorn Inn and were amazed at how great our room is.  We have a huge balcony with a stunning view of the surrounding red rocks, and the uptown area.  We dropped off our stuff and drove up Airport Road to catch the sunset.  There was a gentleman there that said the sunset was at 6:05pm.  We found that to be strange since we thought it was already 6:15pm.  There were lots of people there but we were able to get a few good photos.  The sun finally set and we drove over to the Sedona Airport Restaurant for dinner.  When we left the restaurant, we finally realized that we had crossed another time zone and in fact it was only 7:30pm instead of 8:30pm.

We got back to the hotel and took a quick walk around uptown but most stores were closed.  I guess that means it will be a very early evening tonight.  And hopefully a sleep in day tomorrow.
