Today the great Alaskan RV adventure ends. We packed up the RV one final time but we still had some stuff that we did not want to throw away. So we managed to give away to a family in the campground our leftover bottled water and assorted kitchen items like tin foil and ziplock bags. Since Dave, Cathy and the boys are not returning their RV until tomorrow, we said our goodbyes to them and started our final drive to Anchorage.
We pulled into Great Alaskan Holidays at around 11:15am. When we booked the RV, we indicated that we would return the RV at noon but it was good that we came early since it took a bit of time for them to do the final inspection. And they charge you a $150 USD fine if you are late. While we were waiting, there was a couple from Australia parked next to us who were just picking up their RV. They had many questions about RVing and lucky for them we were able to answer them. We asked them if they wanted any of our leftover rood, so they came and went through the fridge and cupboards and took most of what we had left. We later learned that that happens often in the parking lot and it is a way of paying it forward. In the meantime, Steve and Linda pulled in and began their final inspection. When Karen received the final receipt, it showed that we had driven 1643 miles which is more than the average. It was a great experience renting from Great Alaskan Holidays and I would highly recommend them.
Great Alaskan Holidays dropped the four of us off at the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. Steve and Linda actually do not fly out until tomorrow. We said our goodbyes to them and headed inside. They caught the free shuttle to their hotel and then spent the afternoon exploring downtown Anchorage.
One of the perks of my TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite credit card is priority check in so we headed over to that line. The agent took our bags which were all under fifty pounds and gave us our boarding passes. I noticed that on mine it said that I had TSA pre check, finally. Karen always has that and gets to go to the shorter security line. Not sure why I had it this time. Anyways, we were not boarding until 3:25pm so we headed over to the Alaskan Airlines Lounge and spent the next two and a half hours relaxing before our flight.
For our flight home, we are flying with Air Canada again (46,200 Aeroplan miles + $13.60 CAD for taxes). The flight to Vancouver seemed to go by quick and we landed just after 8:00pm local time. We had a couple of hours to get through customs and security again (so stupid) and managed to grab a quick bite at a food court before heading over to our gate. We were supposed to leave Vancouver at 10:20pm local time but I think it was closer to 10:45pm before we left. I was not able to get any sleep on this flight but luckily it was only a four and a half hour flight. We landed in Toronto just before 6:00am and Karen’s brother Ross was kind enough to pick us up. We had a quick visit with Ross and Susie before driving home. It was weird being in a car after driving in an RV for two weeks. We got to my house where we were greeted with lots of hugs and kisses from Maui.
