RTH

We thought that today would be the best day to do the Road To Hana or also known as RTH.  Because of our late nights, we did not get as early of a start that we wanted.  We got on the road by 10:00am.  Before we left, we decided that we would turn around at either 3:00pm or when we got to the place that sells the coconut candy.  The reasoning behind this was that we did not want to drive back in the dark.  Been there done that, not much fun.  Paia is basically the start of the Road To Hana.  It also has Mana Foods which is a great grocery store to stock up on provisions for the drive.  We picked up a few things for lunch and then we were on our way.

There is not much more to say about the Road To Hana that has not already been said … 59 bridges many of them one lane, 620 curves and breathtaking scenery.  This is the first time that we have done the drive in the rain.  It did make it a bit more scary but the upside is that the waterfalls were much more powerful.

“It’s not about the destination; it’s about the journey”.  This quote sums up nicely the Road To Hana.  We only made a couple of stops.  The first one was in the Keanae Peninsula.  I always love stopping here because of the water crashing on the lava rocks and because of Aunt Sandy’s world famous banana bread.  This is where we enjoyed our lunch.

The second stop was at Nahiku Marketplace.  This is the place where we first discovered coconut candy.  We always make a point of stopping here.  Besides the man that sells the coconut candy, there are a couple of food stands that smell wonderful.  Next time we will make a point to stop here and have lunch.  It was just after 3:00pm so it was time to head back.

Since we did not stop at Ho’okipa in the morning, we decided to stop on the way back.  Ho’okipa is the spot where most people go to surf or windsurf.  There is a lookout over the water which gives you a great vantage point.

We got back into Lahaina around 6:30pm so we decided to have dinner at Aloha Mixed Plate.  Lucky for us we got a table close to the water so that we could enjoy the sunset with our meal.  Once we finished, we went down to Front Street to do some shopping.  The evening ended with Darren dropping by the condo.
