Road trip with Maui

The first long weekend of the spring and we did not want to stay home.  Also we did not want to leave Maui at home.  So Karen came up with the idea of going to Rochester for some shopping and then to Watkins Glen for some exploring.

We got on the road around 10:15am and the drive to Niagara Falls took longer than usual because of everyone else that wanted to go somewhere for the May 24 weekend.  We made a quick pit stop before crossing over at the Whirpool Bridge.

We called ahead to the Cracker Barrel and picked up some lunch. We were going to stop and have our lunch at the first rest area on I-90.  But when we got there, there was no picnic tables or grassy area to walk a dog so we decided to just keep on going.

Many times when we have driven to Rochester, we have seen a sign for the Jell-O Gallery Museum in Le Roy.  Today we decided to go and check it out.  The museum is small but you do learn a lot about Jell-O like the fact that it was invented in Le Roy.  They have original advertising art, a wall of molds, memorabilia and recipe books.  It was a fun stop.

After a thirty minute drive, we were in Rochester and at the Christmas Tree Shops.  We spent a bit of time here.  There is a Pet Smart next door so Maui got to do some shopping of his own.

Maui loves a bargain

On the way to the hotel, we stopped at Powder Mills Park.  When doing some research for the weekend, we came upon this park.  It has many trails but what we found interesting was the fish hatchery.  You can see several varieties of fishes in various stages of development.  We saw two and three year old brown trout.  For $0.25, you can get a small handful of fish food.  Boy can those fish jump when you throw the food in.

It was only a ten minute drive to our hotel for the night, Best Western Plus Victor Inn & Suites ($179.99 USD + $30 pet fee).  We got settled in our room and then I went over to Olive Garden to pick up dinner which we enjoyed back at the hotel.  After dinner, there was a bit more shopping at L.L. Bean, Kohl’s and Walmart.
