Paddling into my 51st year

Happy 51st Birthday to me.

There is nothing better than sleeping in on your birthday.  After getting cards and presents from Karen, we walked over to Rocky Mountain Bagel Co and enjoyed breakfast.  Karen had a day full of adventure for me and it was time to get started.

Lake Louise is about an hour away from Canmore and we were headed there so that we could go canoeing.  I know what you are thinking … Dorothy … In a canoe … No way that will happen.  I can not even remember that last time that I was in a canoe.  What was nice about these canoes is that they have a wider bottom which makes them more stable.  We got fitted with life jackets, given a safety briefing and then we were off.  Surprisingly the canoeing went very well.  We went pretty far down the lake, not to the very end but pretty far.  It was very peaceful being on the water.  The weather was ok when we started but about half way through, the rain came.  That was fine, it just added to the experience.  We made it back to the dock safely and vowed that we would go canoeing again.

After having lunch at The Fairmont’s Deli, we walked around a small part of Lake Louise taking lots of pictures.  Sometimes it is very difficult to get photos without people.

Since the sun was shining, we decided that we should take advantage and head back up the Icefields Parkway to Peyto Lake.  We did not stop there yesterday since it was raining.  We got lucky and found a parking spot right near the walkway.  The walk up to the viewing area was much longer and steeper than I remember.  But once there, you are rewarded with one of the most stunning views in the Canadian Rockies.

We took the Bow Valley Parkway to go to Banff but unfortunately we did not see any wildlife today.  My birthday dinner was at Melissa’s Missteak where we had a fabulous steak dinner.  Afterwards, we walked over to Banff Avenue to check out the various shops.  The day ended back at the condo with birthday cake.

A big thank you to Karen for making this birthday the best one ever.
