We’re back again with more posts!
Today we are on our way to The Big Island (Hawaii). The flight wasn’t leaving until 1:45 PM, so we walked down to Waikiki Beach to take some photos. The beach is truly beautiful, with an exquisite view of Diamond Head.
We also went to check out the Wyland Waikiki Hotel, which is opening soon. (Note to Helayne … you have GOT to stay there … Wyland art everywhere! We searched for him but apparently he is not on Oahu right now).
Flew to The Big Island on Hawaiian Airlines. We left on the 1:45pm flight from Oahu and landed in Kona on the Big Island at 2:28pm. This was a much smaller plane … 2 seats on the left side and 3 seats on the right side. We had a window seat on each side of the plan, hoping for some photo opportunities. It was a quick 45 minute flight until we landed in Kona.
In Kona you walk off the plane and right onto the tarmack. The airport is basically open air … it’s really cool. The check-in, gates, etc. are all outside.
Picked up our car from Thrifty. This time we had a Dodge Caliber. Never seen this type of car before. It basically looks like a gangster car. Felt like the ceiling was very low.
On The Big Island we stayed at the Kona Tiki Hotel. This place is very, very, very laid back. We had an ocean front room … with constant loud waves crashing right below our lanai. This hotel has no telephone, no television, clock or air conditioning in the room.
From the lanai we could watch really bright yellow fish getting caught up in the waves. We could also see the HUGE cruise ships anchored off shore. Tonight’s ship was leaving the Big Island and heading over to Maui.
Went down to the main drag in Kailua-Kona for a very late lunch. The guy running the Kona Tiki Hotel recommended Quinn’s Almost By The Sea for their fish and chips. The food was to die for. “Ono” is our new favourite fish. It’s very heavy … like eating pork chops, but it is all white fish. Left there feeling completely stuffed.
Back to the hotel for a lay down by the pool. Down to the internet cafe to post the Tuesday blog, and then to the grocery store for some provisions.
The evening ended on the lanai, to the sounds of Jimmy Buffett and the ocean.
