Maui, Hawaii

Woke up at 6:00am to the sound of crashing waves and birds.  It’s much easier to get up early in paradise!

Had breakfast at the condo, and then drove to the Upcountry Fair in Makawao.  This fair is very small town – mostly locals and a few tourists.  Watched some cows being judged (!), checked out some nice crafts, etc., listed to a Hawaiian band, and then enjoyed some lunch.  BBQ’d teriyaki chicken with rice and macaroni salad for Dorothy.  This is a really popular dish, and is known as a ‘plate lunch’ in Hawaii.  Karen had the noodles, deep fried wonton, and deep friend banana loompia (like spring rolls, but with banana inside – yummy!).  (Helayne – Komoda Bakery was closed on Sunday, so no cream puffs so far!).

Next we drove to Ho’okipa Beach, which is supposed to be the best place in the world to windsurf.  You could sit for hours and watch the windsurfers in the huge waves.

Today we decided to drive all the way around the West Maui Mountain (Pu’u Kukui Sumit) from Kahului back to Kihei.  For many miles this road is one lane, and winds back and forth along the coast.  When you need to pass an on-coming car, you can almost touch mirrors, with no room for errors.  Steep cliff down to the ocean on the right side, mountain on the left.  But the scenery is stunning.

Stopped at Curley’s Fruit Stand where we bought a whole pineapple, and the guy cut it up for us.  Talk about fresh!  We wound our way along the coast, which is mostly deserted, but with beautiful views.

Ended up near Ka’anapali, where a lot of the resorts are.  Stopped in Lahaina for dinner at Bubba Gump Shrimp.  Our table was right on the water, with waves splashing up to the open window.  Lots of boats docked in the bay.  Checked out an art gallery where Tony Curtis will be appearing later this week.  (Who knew that Tony is an artist?).

Back to the condo to watch the sunset over the West Maui Mountain.  Ahhhh …

I can just taste that fresh pineapple! Too bad about the cream puffs but you know it’s worth the drive! Were the paniolos cute? Did you see the blowhole on that drive in West Maui? Tom and I missed it! You’ve done so much – hard to believe it’s only been 2 days on Maui. Glad you went to the Maui Swap Meet – good timing on your Sat. arrival. Been to Costco yet? Try to find a local Hawaiian CD for me. The ABC store in Vegas had a Christmas one but they were sold out in Dec. Check out Ekolu – I have the 3rilogy. See if you can find 1 and 2! Thanks

Hey guys, sounds like you’re having a blast but that doesn’t surprise me. Just sent our pal back to Edmonton and he asked me to pass along a message ‘he hates you right now’ haha. Hope you enjoy the rest of the trip. Oh yeah, Happy B-Day Dorothy.
