Liz and Heather’s game wasn’t until 1pm so we decided to just hang out at the hotel and put our game faces on. We packed up the cars and headed over to Laval University, to catch the shuttle bus to the venue. Also joining us were Liz’s fiance’s parents Graham and Carolyn who flew in from Calgary to see Liz play. We got to the venue with about a half an hour to spare so we decided to head to the stands and grab our seats. What was really nice was how many people came to see the game and support our last Canadian team in the tournament.
Liz and Heather played the third seeded team, who are from Brazil. The girls played a great game but the Brazilians are a more experienced team. Liz and Heather ended up seventh which is their best showing ever. Even better, the girls got 300 points and $7700. We’re all very proud of them! Unfortunately, Liz and Heather couldn’t stay since they had to drive to Montreal to catch their flight to Poland for their next tournament, which starts on Monday.
Since we had time, we decided to do some sightseeing and headed to Vieux Quebec. We parked the cars at the Chateau Frontenac and met up with most people at the Terrasse Dufferin which is a huge wooden boarwalk in front of the Chateau Frontenac, facing the St Lawrence river. Before we got started, we decided to split up and meet back up at the Chateau later.
Karen and I teamed up with the Paisley Maloneys (Dave, Cathy and Michael) for the afternoon. Before we got going, Dave and I headed to Starbucks to get some drinks and all of a sudden people came running in. We looked out and saw that it was sprinkling. We thought what a bunch of babies. We got our orders and headed outside where we found Karen, Cathy and Michael. I was just taking a picture of the Paisley Maloneys in front of a statue when all of a sudden, the skies opened up and drenched us. We ran for cover into the Chateau Frontenac. The rain didn’t last long but it broke the humidity.
Dave, Cathy, Michael, Karen and I spent the day wandering the many winding streets of Vieux Quebec. We saw Porte Saint-Louis, Porte Kent and Port Saint-Jean which are the gateways into Vieux Quebec. You see Vieux Quebec is surrounded by a stone wall and you can only get into it by going through the gateways. We also went to Basilique-Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Quebec where we were lucky enough to catch the very end of a beautiful wedding. The wedding party and all of their guests went across the street to Place de l’Hotel-de-Ville where they took their photos. The inside of the Basilica is outstanding, with a stunning gilded ceiling, stained glass windows, and magnificent altar.
After the wedding, we headed to Rue du Tresor which is an open air art gallery. There are about thirty artists displaying their artwork. We didn’t have a plan so we just went up and down the various streets. At times, the streets get very hilly and you find yourself looking up a steep hill. The whole area is very European feeling, with lots of little shops and outdoor restaurants, beautiful architecture, and lots of history.
We found a cute little restaurant called Cafe du Buade where the five of us ended up having dinner. After dinner, we headed back to the Chateau Frontenac where our cars were parked. It didn’t take us long to get back to the hotel to continue the celebration with the rest of the gang, into the wee hours of the morning.
It was a very fun, very stressful (at the volleyball games), very exciting trip to Quebec City, and we will definitely be going back to enjoy more of the sights.
