Head in the clouds

There was no sleeping in today because someone decided that he had to be up early.   After breakfast, we packed up the car and headed out for our day in the Adirondacks.

Always when doing research for our trips, we try to find out what events are happening in the area.  Karen learned that today the Lake Placid Center for the Arts was having a 5km benefit run called “Run the Colors of the Arts”.   It was being held at the Lake Placid Horse Show Grounds and we made our way over there for the start of the race.  Prior to the start, each runner is given a paper cup filled with powdered paint.  As the announcer started the race, everyone threw their cups into the air and everyone became covered in the paint.  We learned that along the route, there were colour stations where the racers could get more powdered paint.

After seeing the first set of runners head back into the grounds, we decided to leave and head up Whiteface Mountain.  On our way, we stopped in Wilmington to pick up some sandwiches from the Country Bear Diner & Bakery and chocolates from the Adirondack Chocolates factory.

To get to the peak of Whiteface Mountain, you need to drive up  the Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway.  The road twists and turns as it makes it’s way to the top which is approximately 4800 feet above sea level.  From the summit on a clear day, you can see Vermont and Canada.  Also at the top is Whiteface Castle which you have to drive through before actually parking your car.  As we got out of the car, we realized that the temparature was 9°C.  We threw on all of the clothes that we brought with us and walked over to the castle.  We didn’t take the stairs to summit since the clouds were obstructing the view.   We got back to the car, had our lunch and then made our way back down.  As we drove back into Lake Placid, we would see people fly fishing on the river.

We were really lucky to find a parking spot in busy downtown Lake Placid.  We spent the next couple of hours exploring more of the interesting shops.  Unfortunately it started to rain so we decided to head back to our rental unit.

We were all just relaxing when all of a sudden Tucker and Apache, the owner’s dogs, came up to the back door to see if Maui could come out and play.  Maui was very happy to have new doggie pals to run with.  Since the weather was not co-operating, we ended up getting dinner from Nicola’s Italian Restaurant which we enjoyed at home.   We all were tired from our day, so the night ended with a roaring fire, snacks and mindless TV.
