As usual, the time change wreaks havoc with me. It was after midnight when I finally fell asleep but by 3:30am, I was wide awake. I managed to finish up the blog and then finally decided around 6:30am, that I might as well unpack. Before we left on this trip, we said that we should get up early and make the most of the day, just like the locals do.
We started Karen’s birthday celebration with the opening of presents on the lanai to the sound of some giant crashing waves. We decided to try someplace new for us for breakfast. The Gazebo is a restaurant that is located about five minutes north of us in the Napili Shores Maui by Outrigger resort. As the name implies, it is an outdoor restaurant right beside the ocean. Because it is small, there is always a line and we had to wait about twenty minutes before we got seated. We ended up ordering the two best sellers according to the waitress … the fried rice plate (1/2 order) and the pineapple, banana and mac nut pancakes. The food was excellent and so was the view. After picking up some provisions at Times Supermarket, we headed back to the condo to relax.
Every Sunday, Lahaina Gateway hosts the Maui Gift & Craft Fair. The drive to the plaza was the first time that we got to see first hand the destruction as a result of the fires on August 8, 2023. In one area, all that was left of the homes were the cement walls. It was very sad to see. We did not have much time at the craft fair but we did manage to do a little bit of shopping. We then headed over across the street to the Safeway and Longs Drugs to pick up a few things we were not able to get earlier. The rest of the afternoon was spent lounging around the condo watching the surfers and looking for whales.
I asked Karen where she wanted to go for her birthday dinner and she said Coconut’s Fish Cafe in Kihei. After having their awesome fish tacos, we went over to The Grand Wailea to see their Christmas Tree lightning. Unfortunately the only option for parking was valet at $20, so instead we stopped in at The Shops of Wailea. And how did Karen finish up her birthday, but with cake of course.
