Saturdays on Maui means one thing … Swap Meet. Each weekend from 7:00am until 1:00pm, vendors set up their tents to sell everything from clothes to souvenirs to fresh produce to fancy donuts. We left the condo around 7:30am for the one hour drive to Kahului. We saw Ross and Susie on the highway but they ended up taking a different way than us but we seemed to arrive at the same time. Everyone was looking for something different today. Deanna was looking for a dress for the wedding tomorrow, Cathy was looking for Hawaiian shirts for the boys to also wear to the wedding, Dave was looking for a Hawaiian shirt for himself and Karen and I had nothing specific to look for. We spent close to four hours wandering the various aisles. We got separated early on but would run into each other from time to time. At one point, we ran into Liz and Algis who were also there and the boys compared their Hawaiian shirt purchases.
By the time we were finished shopping, we were hungry so we headed into Kihei to have lunch at Coconuts Fish Cafe. The place was really busy but we managed to snag a surfboard table inside. Lunch was great and everyone left quite full. Karen and I wanted to show the others how the other half vacations in Maui so we took them to see the Grand Wailea Resort. This is where all the movie stars stay. Since there is only valet parking, Karen and Dave dropped the rest of us off and went in search of parking. I took Cathy, Michael, Liam and Deanna on a quick tour of the resort. There are pools, cabanas, a seaside chapel, an open air lobby and a big beautiful beach. Karen and Dave managed to find parking at the Wailea Beach lot so they walked over and met us. We all agreed that the Noelani is a much better place to stay. The pool and the ocean are right out front which they are not at the Grand Wailea. For fun we looked up the prices which appear to start from$350USD/night up to over $3000USD/night. Too rich for my blood.
We wanted to show the rest of the gang a few more beaches in South Maui so we headed to Makena State Park which is also known as Big Beach. We did not do any swimming here since the waves were too big and the undertow was strong. The boys still managed to have fun playing along the water’s edge.
Our last stop was The Secret Cove which you access through a small opening in a rock wall. It is not much of a secret anymore once it was in the book “Maui Revealed”. The boys yet again managed to have fun even though they did not get into the water.
We got back to the condo where Dave and Cathy made a lovely BBQ burger dinner. We even managed to finish off the Haupia ice cream. The night ended with everybody minus Liam watching TV.
