Walking the walls

Last night we shut the curtains before going to bed so we missed our sail into Dubrovnik, Crotia.  By the time we got up at 8:00am, we had already arrived.  We did not have a tour booked for this port but we knew that we were going to Old Town and walking the city walls.  Norwegian offered a service where for $15 USD / person, they will shuttle you back and forth between the ship and Old Town which is approximately a fifteen minute ride.

Dubrovnik, Crotia

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is surrounded by a defensive wall that is over a thousand years old.  The wall is anywhere from nine to eighteen feet thick and up to seventy-five in height.  The full length of the wall is 1.2 miles.  We entered through the Pile Gate and we saw that there were too many people lined up for the entrance to the City Wall.  Therefore we walked down the Main Street to the East City Wall entrance.  We paid our entrance fee (120 kunas / person) and proceeded up the narrow steep set of stairs.

When you get to the top, you can only walk in one direction.  The walk is strenuous and narrow at times but there is always a spot to stop to take pictures and take a rest.  At some points you can see the Adriatic Sea and at others you are looking over Old Town’s red roofed buildings.  Near the top at Fort Mineta, there is a little hole in the wall place, literally, that serves beers and fresh made juices.  We walked only half way around and that took us about one and a half hours.

Placa (or Stardun as the locals call it) is the Main Street that runs through Old Town.  It is made of marble and it is wide.  There are narrow cobblestone side streets that run off of it.  Both the Placa and side streets are lined with shops, churches and restaurants.  We managed to find a little place where we enjoyed a couple of salads for lunch along with free Wi-Fi.  After lunch, we walked around taking more pictures and doing a little bit of shopping.

We got back around 4:00pm and headed back to the room for a little rest.  We saw in the Daily Program that at 5:15pm, there was going to be Beatles Name That Tune in one of the lounges.  We teamed up with a Grandmother and Granddaughter hoping that the more people the better.  I was thoroughly disappointed with our showing.  We scored 13 out of 20.  I know all the songs but Beatle song titles are difficult.  The team that won got 17.

We knocked off another restaurant off of the list by having dinner in the Garden Dining Room.  Karen had the Italian Panzanella Frisée Salad and Steak Frites.  I had the Loaded Corn On the Cob and Roasted Chicken Breast with Mashed Potatoes.  We both ended our meal with a warm chocolate volcano dessert.  Tonight we went and watched Karaoke Superstars Competition #1 in the Galaxy of the Stars.  There was a family with three daughters and all of them got up to sing but only one sister made it to the finals.
