Beautiful drive

We got an early start this morning because we were doing the road to Hana.  Hana is approximately 52 miles from Kahului but it takes over three hours to get there.  This is because there are over 600 curves, 59 bridges with many of them being one lane and lots of interesting places to stop.  Before leaving on vacation, I downloaded an app to my iPhone called the GyPSy guide – Road To Hana.  This app was cool in that whenever we would get to a certain part on the trip, the guide would just start talking about whatever was up ahead.

After leaving the condo around 8:30am, we stopped in Paia to gas up the car and pick up lunch from Mana Foods.  Our first stop was the lookout over Ho’okipa Beach Park.  This place is known as one of the best windsurfing places in the world.  Unfortunately there were no windsurfers when we were there.  Not sure if it was because the waves were really big.

Our next stop was the Keanae Arboretum.  This was something new for us.  We spent about a half an hour walking around looking at all of the various plants and trees.  Just past the arboretum, we took the road down to the Keanae Peninsula.  The shoreline is made up of lava pinnacles with big crashing waves which is where we enjoyed our lunch.

Our last stop was the Wai’anapanapa State Park which has a small black sand beach, lava tubes and a blowhole.  It’s a quick drive from the park to the town of Hana – our destination.  When we got to Hana, we decided that we would not go any further since it was getting late in the afternoon and we wanted to get back before dark.

The drive back to Paia took about two hours and that got us to Ho’okipa Beach just as the sun was setting.  We stopped to see if there were any turtles but there wern’t any.  Oh well, maybe next time.  We had dinner at Flatbread Company in Paia before heading back to the condo.
