Cows in the dark

Today we had lots of things planned.  We first started our day with fresh warm malasadas from Sugar Beach Bake Shop which Paula picked up after church.  I will definitely be going back to check out the other baked goods that they have.

Next up was a trip to Lahaina to check out the craft and gift fair at the Lahaina Civic Center.  Before we got there, Karen spotted a Hawaiian Monk Seal at Launiupoko Beach Park which is the same beach where I saw one before.  Unfortunately, no one from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was there to protect the seal.  After taking some pictures, we got back in the car and then finally arrived at the craft fair.  The vendors were located inside and outside which was nice.  We did see some of the same vendors that we saw yesterday but there were many more that we had not seen.  All of us managed to get some Christmas shopping done here.  Once we finished at the craft fair, we headed back to Kihei but first we stopped at Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop to pick up a late lunch including a Macnut Chocolate Pie.

Tonight we wanted to watch the sunset from Haleakala which is a volcano.  On our way to the crater, we stopped in Makawo to do some quick shopping at Sherri Reeve.   The road up to the summit takes about two hours and it’s a winding road.  Whether you do sunrise or sunset, you are always driving one way down in the dark.  Before we got up to the summit, we stopped at the Park Headquarters Visitor Center to change into our warm clothes.  Pu’u’u’la’ula Summit which is as high as you can go is 10023 feet above sea level.  Also it’s very cold up there … 9°C tonight.  It’s really weird being above the clouds.  It’s hard to describe the experience up there … I tell people that it is magical to watch the sun set that high up.  After taking lots and lots of pictures, we started our trip home.  The drive down got scary a couple of times, when cows all of a sudden appeared in the middle of the road.  All that we needed to make the drive even more dangerous, would have been fog.

We finally got back to civilization and decided to have dinner at the Kula Bistro on a recommendation from Sherri Reeve.  After dinner, we ended our night with a quick stop at Wal-Mart before calling it a night.
