One of the last big things to do on the trip was the Road to Hana and we decided to do that today. The last time we were on Maui, I purchased an app called Road to Hana GyPSy Driving Tour. Using the GPS functionality on your smart phone, when you get to a place on the drive, the app will start giving you information like best places to visit. It is a major step up from the Road to Hana driving cassettes. We got up early and left the condo at 7:15am and arrived in Paia around 9:00am to start our adventure.
Some stats about the Road to Hana. It is 52 miles long and has 59 bridges (many of them one lane) and approximately 620 curves. If you do not stop, it should take you two and a half hours. It took us much longer than that. We were stopped for about half an hour due to rocks on the road from a mud slide. We enjoyed Twin Falls and Keanae Arboretum before heading down the Keanae Peninsula where we picked up Aunt Sandy’s banana bread which we enjoyed as part of our lunch. This is probably my favourite place on the Road to Hana. I love seeing the waves crashing over the lava rocks.
We continued our trip after lunch with stops at Nahiku Marketplace, Wai’anapanapa State Park, Wailua Falls and finished our trip with checking out the pools at the Oheo Gulch in the Haleakala National Park. We started our return trip just after 5:00pm and arrived back in Paia around 8:00pm. It is much harder navigating that road in the dark. We had awesome pizzas at The Flatbread Company before getting back to the condo around 10:00pm.
Every time we do the Road to Hana, we come up with more tips. So here are the new ones that we have added … Bring bug spray, a hoodie or plastic jacket, hand sanitizer and proper footwear for hiking.
