May 24th weekend is considered the unofficial start to summer. Some people stay home and plant their flowers but many people decide to get into their cars and drive. We chose the latter. Karen (my friend), Kaili (her dog) and I decided that the destination would be Ottawa, Ontario, the country’s capital. Karen’s brother Paul lives there with his lovely wife Jen and their two awesome daughters, Gillian and Megan. They also have two dogs, Princess and Cleo and they happened to be babysitting a Maltese/Shih Tzu cross named Goose.
Our journey started Saturday morning and we had to stop in Smiths Falls which is about 1 hour from Ottawa. The purpose of the stop was that there is a Hershey Factory and Outlet there. After loading up the car with lots of chocolates, we headed to Ottawa.
We arrived at the Maloney’s and everyone was happy to see each other. Even all of the doggies were happy. After having a BBQ dinner, we headed down to Dow’s Lake to see the fireworks. The fireworks was one of the events of the Canadian Tulip Festival. We stood in the rain for almost an hour to see about five minutes worth of fireworks.
On Sunday, we played a baseball in the park. Even Kaili played and he was pretty good. We then headed out to the movie theatre and caught “Shrek 2”. It was hilarious. We went back to the Commissioners Park to see the tulips. They were very beautiful. Dinner was at the Newport Restaurant, home of the Elvis Sighting Society. If you are an Elvis fan, you have to go to this restaurant. The walls are covered with Elvis stuff and they have the best pizza in town.
Monday came and we had to leave. The visit was too short but very enjoyable.
