600+ curves, 59 bridges = the road to Hana

We got an early start today, just after 8am.  You need to do that to beat the traffic when taking the road to Hana.  The trip to Hana takes you over 59 bridges, around 600+ curves and is approximately 42 miles.  The trip is not about the destination but is about the journey.

Our first stop was in Paia to gas up the car and we were ready to go.  Just outside of Paia, there was a roadside shack that was selling smoothies and banana bread.  I had a pineapple banana smoothie and it was to die for.  It was all natural … right down to the sugar cane juice that the man squeezed into the mixture.

We took turns driving the road and enjoying the beautiful scenery.  Some of our stops included the Keane Peninsula, the black sand beach at Wainapanapa State Park, Hana Bay and Oheo Gulch (also known as the Seven Sacred Pools).

Probably 99% of the people turn around in Hana and go back the way they came.  Not us.  We decided to keep going down the road.  The drive is pretty hairy in spots where it’s only gravel and very narrow.  At one point, there was a gravel truck that was coming down around the blind corner as we were coming up.  Luckily for most of the trip, there was no traffic coming the other way.

We got back to the condo just after 7pm and picked up pizza for dinner.
