What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas … unless of course you are travelling with me and then it will be posted in the blog

We only have one full day in Las Vegas and we have a long list of activities and places we want to visit so let the fun begin.  The first stop was at Freed’s Bakery where we picked up my birthday cake, the World Famous Strawberry Shortcake.  Even though my birthday is not until next week, we always make a point of getting some kind of dessert from Freed’s.  We left with the cake along with a couple of cannolis, some cookies and macaroons.  We had to get the cake out of the heat so it was back to the hotel to drop it off.

At the hotel, the six of us packed into Dave and Cathy’s rental car and headed over to the Las Vegas South  Premium Outlet mall.  After about an hour of shopping, we grabbed lunch from Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers which we enjoyed while driving up the Las Vegas Strip.  The last time we were here was 2011 and all I can say is that the Strip has changed so much.

The only thing that Liam wanted to do was to visit the Las Vegas Natural History Museum.  I did not even know that Las Vegas had such a museum.  We made our way over there and since they close at 4:00pm on Sundays, that only gave us about two hours to explore the various exhibits such as the African Savanna Gallery and the International Wildlife Gallery.  I think Liam’s favourites were the Prehistoric Life Gallery and the Gift Shop.

Las Vegas has a store called 5.11 Tactical which sells clothing and gear that primarily targets the military, law enforcement and public safety personnel.  We thought that Dave would enjoy checking out the store since he already has some of their products.  As we were parking the car, we saw that there were a couple of fancy cars next door at Royal Exotic Car Rentals.  You see the only thing that Michael wanted to do was to see exotic cars.  Now he has seen many of them while we have been driving around but this place gave him the opportunity to see them up close.  After we finished up at 5.11 Tactical, we were just pulling out when a purple Lamborghini pulled in.  Michael was very excited and asked if he could get out of the car to take a picture.  Michael got more that just a picture, he actually got to sit in the car.  You should have see the smile on Michael’s face.

With it being almost 100°F, it was time to get back to the hotel and enjoy the late afternoon in the pool.

While doing our research, we came across Omega Mart.  The hard part is trying to explain what it is.  I guess the best way to describe it is that it is an interactive art installation.  It is a “supermarket” from which you can access various other hidden areas and uncover a narrative.  We had booked the tickets awhile ago and we wanted to keep it a secret from the boys.  The funny thing was that Michael was telling us all about the place yesterday.  We stopped in at In-N-Out Burger for dinner before heading over there.

I do not want to give too much away about Omega Mart because it is something that needs to be seen in person.  But I have to say it was a wild and fun experience.  The four of us spent a couple of hours exploring all of the hidden spaces behind the “supermarket”.

We left Omega Mart and headed over to the Bonanza Gift Shop which is billed as the World’s Largest Gift Shop at over forty thousand square feet.  We picked up some souvenirs to remind us of our time here.  It was then off to Fremont Street so that we could make a quick stop at an ABC Store.

We decided that we should drive the Las Vegas Strip all the way back to the hotel so that the boys could see it at night.

And how did we end our world wind day in Las Vegas, but with Birthday cake of course.

Thanks for the cake
