The time change is still wreaking havoc on us—everyone was up super early today! I even found Nana sleeping on the outdoor couch before 5:00 a.m. After a quick breakfast, Karen, Darlene, and I headed out for our first whale-watching adventure.

We always book with Ultimate Whale Watch, a locally owned and operated company that’s been around since 1982. What we love about them is that they only use small zodiac boats, which makes getting to the whales much faster. I dropped Karen and Darlene off just after 9:00 a.m., and already eight groups were ahead of us. After check-in, our wait was short before we walked over to the boat launch.

We were greeted by Jill and Casey, who would be our crew aboard the Wahine Kai. We ended up at the very back of the boat, each on opposite sides. At first, we thought this might not be ideal, but it turned out to be the best spot. As we left the harbor, Jill gave us a safety briefing, and then we were off.

It didn’t take long to spot our first whales. There were a pair together, and then a juvenile that we spent a good amount of time watching. Jill estimated he was about three years old based on his markings and kept calling him a “typical teenager… you never know what they’re going to do.” And she was right—he performed spouts, peduncle flips, and even a couple of breaches. It was the perfect start to our whale-watching adventures.

Back at the condo, we learned that Nana and Joan had spent the morning relaxing on the lanai. We threw some hot dogs on the BBQ for lunch and then enjoyed a little nap.
In the afternoon, we wanted to take Darlene, Nana, and Joan to the south side of the island, specifically the Wailea area. We stopped by the Grand Wailea, a large luxury beachfront resort, thinking it would be fun for everyone to see where the rich and famous stay. We walked through the hotel, explored the grounds, and checked out the beach. While everyone agreed it was beautiful, they said they prefer our condo at Kahana Village.

Next door is The Shops at Wailea, where we did a bit of shopping before heading over to Coconuts Fish Cafe in Kihei for dinner. We got back to the condo around 8:30 p.m., and shortly after, it was bedtime. Early mornings mean early evenings!
