Instead of a beach day today, we decided to go exploring the north western part of the island. The drive is around the West Maui Mountains Pu’u Kukui Summit. It’s a beautiful drive but very terrifying in a few spots. There is about 1-1/2 miles of very narrow road and another 2-1/2 miles that they considered narrowish. This means that the road is one lane and if you meet another car, one of you has to back up to a point where you can kinda pull over and let the other driver pass. Paula was driving up a very steep hill, one lane wide, mountain on the right, sheer drop on the left, when another car came straight down at us. Eventually the other car and the van behind him, had to slowly back up to a spot where we could just barely squeeze by.
One of the places we did stop at was the Nakalele Blowhole to get some pictures. There is some wicked storm that is north of us that is creating huge waves. I believe they said that the waves could be in excess of fifty feet. The blowhole was blowing pretty good.
We stopped in Paia and had lunch at Cafe Des Amis. Afterwards, we walked over to the beach to see the giant waves. There were some crazy surfers and boogie boarders in the water. We tried to go to Ho’okipa Beach to see the windsurfers but because of the size of the waves, the police closed the beach down. The traffic going into and leaving Paia was crazy because everybody was heading to the north shore to see these waves.
We headed into Kahului and stopped into the Kmart, Wal-Mart and had dinner at L&L Hawaiian Barbecue in the Maui Marketplace Mall. We got back to the condo for another early evening of relaxing and watching tv.
Don’t forget to get the cream puffs! Are you going to the Flea Market next Sat.? I’m so jealous!
Happy 5-0!
