The rum was flowing

I can not believe that I slept in unti 7:30am today.  The only thing that was planned for today was a luau but not until 5:30pm.  This gave us the entire day.  We asked the boys what they wanted to do and they said swimming in the pool.  Karen, Deanna and I went with them while Dav and Cathy drove into Lahaina to do some shopping.  The pool is much warmer than it was last week which is nice.  It did rain for a few minutes but we did not mind because we were already wet.  We spent the entire morning there which is really helping my tan.  After all that swimming and because it was getting close to lunch time, we headed upstairs to eat.  One of the things that Karen and I bought at the grocery store was Roselani Haupia ice cream.  We read about it from a trip report on TripAdvisor and this person had gone through three gallons of it.  We figured we should try it out.  OMG … I think it is some of the best ice cream I have ever had.  We had it for dessert and the boys really like it.  Too bad we can not bring any of it home.

Michael … getting to be such a great swimmer

Once Dave and Cathy came back, we decided that we should hit a beach for the afternoon.  Karen read that Kahekili Beach in Ka’anapali has good snorkelling and swimming.  And it is only about five minutes from the condo.  We got the cars packed up and made the quick drive there.  The other good thing about this beach is that there is lots of parking there.  The wind was really strong today and we actually had to move from where we originally set up because the sand was just blowing everywhere.  We got settled and then some of us headed to the water.  Deanna, Liam and I stayed back on the beach because the undertow was strong.  Michael and Dave went snorkelling and saw lots of fish.  The rest of us relaxed and worked on our tans.  Even Liz came by and joined us for part of the afternoon.

We got back to the condo around 4:00pm so that we could get ready for the luau.  Karen had booked the Old Lahaina Luau ($114.58 USD / person) months ago because it sells out.  It is affiliated with Aloha Mixed Plate (which is right next door) and Leoada’s Kitchen and Pie Shop.  Therefore you know the food will be good.  We had all the Maloneys at the luau … Karen, Dave, Cathy, Michael, Liam, Ross, Susie, Liz, Algis, Deanna, Greg and Anne.  When we arrived, we were greeted with leis and Mai-Tai’s.  The evening was off to a great start.  Before dinner, there was lots of things to do … check out the sunset, learn about the Hawaiian culture and watch how they unearth the kalua pig from the Imu.  Dinner was served buffet style which included many Hawaiian dishes.  The food was very good and the drinks were even better.  After dinner, there was a show that told the story of Hawaiians through song and dance.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
