Yeah … we got to sleep in today. Those few extra hours of sleep makes a world of difference. We did our usual by having a buffet breakfast by the Lido pool. We were lucky enough to see whales again.
When we arrived in Ketchikan at 10:00 AM, I headed off the ship first to pick up our car from Alaska Car Rental ($79.99 USD). We decided that we would do the same thing as we did in Juneau, just tour around on our own. I went back to the dock to pick up the rest of the gang.
Where does one go when they first arrive in Ketchikan, but Wal-Mart of course. We saw that they even had a free shuttle for people from the cruise ship. I had read online that Wal-Mart has really good souvenirs and you know what, they did.
There is only one road into and out of town so we decided to head north, for 18 miles. We stopped to see the totem poles at Totem Bight State Historical Park. Lucky for us there was a path that we could push Papa on. We learned that each carving on the totem has a meaning. We went as far as the road could go and then headed south back into town.
We had lunch at Alaska Fish House Restaurant right on the dock. Everyone had the alaskan halibut and chips except for Nana who had one pound of dungeness crab. She says that this is the best crab she’s ever had. We spent a bit of time walking around the shops before taking the only road south out of town, for 12 miles. We were all sad that we didn’t see any bears but we did see large jumping fish.
I dropped everyone off at the dock while I returned the car. Before boarding the ship, there was free wi-fi right at the dock so I decided to do a bit of surfing, along with the crew who were hanging out using their laptops. All aboard was 5:30 PM today, but there was so much shopping in this town that we will need to come back again.
We had dinner in the Vista dining room. Unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of the menu. But from what I can remember Nana had the ceasar salad and orange-spice pork, Papa had the Italian wedding soup and grilled chicken, Karen had the beef and chicken satay, chilled strawberry soup and roast turkey and I had the beef and chickey satay, garden salad and roast turkey as well.
After dinner, we all headed to the casino where I ended up winning $100. I quickly cashed out and ran back to the room with my winnings. While I’m here writing my blog, Nana and Karen are down spending money in the shops on board. I think Nana enjoys the cruising lifestyle. Now Karen and I are heading to the screening room to see “The Company Men”.
