New Mexico – October 6, 2005

Today was the first day in a string of early mornings.  We got up around 3:30am and make our way over to the Detroit Metro Airport.  We flew to Albuquerque with American Airlines with a 2 hour stop in Dallas.  I will fly with them again since all of their seats have extra leg room.  We landed around 10:30am and made our way over to the rental car shuttle.  We picked up our Ford Focus from Hertz and made our way to Old Town.

We wandered around Old Town and had lunch at the Church Street Cafe.  This would be the start of our obsession with chips & salsa and sopapillas.  What are sopapillas you ask.  They are a fried pastry that you eat with honey.  They are so delicious.  We vowed that we would try and have them every chance we could.  After lunch, we headed to our hotel to have a quick nap.  We were staying at the Super 8 – Rio Rancho.

After our nap, we made our way over to the park.  The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta was celebrating it’s 34th year.  The evening’s events were the Wells Fargo Special Shape Glowdeo and the AfterGlow Fireworks show.  It stills amazes me how they can get that many hot air balloons in one place.  We headed back to the hotel and crashed for the night.
