Nanaimo Bar Trail

What does one do in Nanaimo .. eat Nanaimo Bars of course. While doing our research for this trip, we came across something called the Nanaimo Bar Trail. It is a list of over thirty different stops where you can get some variation of the Nanaimo Bar whether it is the classic bar to a cocktail to a pedicure.

It took us about thirty minutes to get to Nanaimo Museum to pick up the brochure for the Nanaimo Bar Trail. Karen dropped me off and I ran in and picked it up. The other thing I got was a traditional Nanaimo Bar from Serious Coffee (stop #31) which happened to be next door to the museum. Because it was getting close to lunch time, we went to White Spot a British Columbia legend.

After lunch, it was off to Kiyo Salon & Day Spa (stop #13) for the Nanaimo Bar pedicure. All I can is that it was a heavenly experience. It starts with your feet soaking in a milk bath, followed up with a chocolate sugar scrub. It then continues with a rich chocolate masque and finishes up with a vanilla custard massage. My feet felt like a million dollars.

We headed over to the Departure Bay ferry terminal to pick up our friend Darren. When Darren is not travelling around for work (Elvis Tribute Artist), he lives in Vancouver. Lucky for us he was in town and said that he would come over to the island for a quick visit.

We spent the rest of the afternoon just hanging out. We walked around the waterfront and downtown Nanaimo. Since Darren had his dog Callie with him, we needed to find a place for dinner that had outdoor seating. We were lucky hat Pirate Chips (stop #26) has outdoor seating. The restaurant is known for it’s deep fried Nanaimo Bar which we had along with a deep fried banana split.

We could not find a place where we could watch the Raptors that would allow dogs, so we ended up in the parking lot of the Landmark Cinemas watching the last five minutes of the game on a cell phone. Soon it was time to drop Darren and Callie back at the ferry terminal. As usual, another adventure with Darren.
