Las Vegas, Nevada

In 1998, Karen and I went to Orillia, Ontario to check out the Elvis Festival.  We saw this “Elvis” guy singing across the street in front of a store.  We decided to stay across the street since he looked pretty good from there and we didn’t want to wreck the experience.  We eventually did end up crossing the street and that’s how we met Darren Lee.  You see Darren is an Elvis Tribute Artist and in 1997, he won the World Title in Memphis, Tennessee.  Over the years, we have gotten to know Darren and his lovely wife Allison that they are like family to us.  Darren moved to Las Vegas in 2000 and since then, we have been making regular trips there.  Earlier in the summer, Darren & Allison kept asking us when we were coming for a visit.  They said that we could stay with them at their new house.  We thought about it for like 2 seconds and said yes.

A big thank you to Darren & Allison.  We love you guys.

We were very lucky to find cheap flights with Spirit Air which flys from Detroit.  Now before you say why are you flying from Detroit, there are several good reasons.  #1 – you have many more choices for flights than you do from Toronto.  #2 – you don’t have the hassle of customs at the airport.  #3 – and most importantly, you can go shopping before you leave on your trip.  This means that you can leave your purchases in the car and you don’t have to fly back with all of the stuff that you bought.  Since our flight was at 7:45pm, we decided to head down in the afternoon and check out Meijer.  It’s a combination of Zehrs and Wal-Mart.  We picked up some groceries and then had dinner at Fuddruckers since we knew there would be no food served on our flight.

We landed in Las Vegas at 8:55pm.  We got our bags and headed outside to catch the shuttle bus.  It was like walking into an oven.  It’s hot but it’s a dry heat.  It had to be at least 90°F.  We had been checking the newspaper for the last week and seeing what the temperature was in Las Vegas.  It was the hottest city in the world, even hotter than India and Egypt.  I guess I didn’t need to pack 4 pairs of socks.

We picked up our car and headed over to the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino to meet up with Darren.  He works in the “American Superstars” show.  Our last visit to Las Vegas was over a year ago and it was really nice to see him again.  We head over to his house to pick up Allison.  Darren had a midnight wedding at the Las Vegas Garden of Love Wedding Chapel and Allison was dressed up as “Priscilla” for the ceremony.  The wedding was a blast since the couples who renewed their vows were friends of Allison’s from Colorado.

After the ceremony, we went back to Darren & Allison’s house.  Their house is awesome … 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and the best part … a pool and spa.  This was a great bed & breakfast.  We finally got to bed at around 3am.
