It has been really nice sleeping in the last few days. Once we got up and moving, we said our goodbye to The Beach Club Resort and started on the third part of our vacation. Fifteen minutes from Parksville is The Old Country Market in Coombs. They are famous for the goats on the roof of the market. It started as a roadside market but over the years it has expanded to include eateries and shops. We picked up a half dozen donuts from Billy G’s Donut Shop, some fresh fruits and vegetables from the marketplace and a couple of sandwiches from the market.
We got back on the road for the fifteen minute drive to MacMillan Provincial Park. The park is home to a 157 hectare stand of ancient Douglas firs known as Cathedral Grove. We walked the trails on both sides of the highway. I could not believe how big some of these trees are. The biggest tree in the grove is actually taller than The Leaning Tower of Pisa.
It took us about two hours to get to Cox Bay Resort just outside of Tofino where we will be staying for the next four days. We dropped our stuff in unit 10 ($295.80 CAD / night including taxes) and then we headed to the beach. Because it was close to low tide, there was lots of beach to explore. While we were standing there, Karen said it best … Tofino is a combination of Alaska (mountains and scenery) and Hawaii (beach and waves).
After a fabulous BBQ dinner, Karen went back to the beach while I got started on the blog. She said that the beach looked like a postcard, so I grabbed my camera and headed down there. There were many surfers riding the waves, lots of dogs running up and down the beach and people just enjoying the sunset. We ended the evening in front of the fireplace.
