It was an somewhat early start today because we were going to be doing a bit of driving to get to our destination, Yoho National Park in British Columbia. The park is about an hour and a half away from Canmore.
Our first stop was the Spiral Tunnels. This is where you can actually see the start and the end of a train at the same time. The train goes through two figure eight loops in Mount Ogden. When Karen and I were here back in July, we waited over an hour an no train. Today it only took about ten minutes for a train to appear.
Emerald Lake was our next stop. The first thing that we noticed as we approached the lake was that there were hardly any people canoeing. Therefore we were able to walk right up and get a couple of canoes ($75 CAD / hour). Once again time goes by quickly when you are paddling around Yoho National Park’s largest lake. We managed to get further down the lake this time. There were a couple of times, when we would stop and look at the mountains surrounding us. We had worked up an appetite, so we had lunch at Cilantro Cafe.
After leaving Emerald Lake, we made a quick stop at the Natural Bridge. The force of the Kicking Horse River formed this stone bridge.
We knew that Takakkaw Falls was not to be missed so that was our last stop in Yoho National Park. We did the short walk to the base of the falls. As you stand there looking at it, you feel very small.
The drive back to Canmore had us going down the Bow Valley Parkway. Unfortunately we struck out on the wildlife. So what does one do when that happens, you drive the Lake Minnewanka scenic drive. And guess what happened, we saw mountain sheep and two of the largest bull elks we have ever seen. Our wildlife streak continues.
The day ended with a late dinner and a quick dip in the pool.
