It was an early morning today. By early I mean we were on the road by 7:30am for our trip to Seward. We booked a Kenai Fjords National Park boat tour with Kenai Fjords Tour company. Since we have to check in for the the tour at 10:30am and it takes two and a half hours to get there, we had to get moving early.
We have been down the Seward Highway a few times during our visit here in Alaska but we have never gone farther than mile marker 47. It was nice to go beyond there and see more of the stunning scenery.
We arrived at the Kenai Fjords Tour company parking lot around 10:15am and it was a quick shuttle bus ride to their offices to check in. We still had about a half an hour before boarding so we checked out the various stores around the dock area.
We got back to the dock and boarded the Callisto Voyager. There are no assigned seats on this cruise, therefore Karen and I found ourselves a table for two. The tour was to leave at 11:30am but since everyone was already onboard, we left at 11:10am. As we left Seward and made our way to Resurrection Bay, the crew came around and served lunch.
The next six hours was spent admiring the beauty of the Kenai Fjords National Park. The tour has a usual route that they follow but Captain Tim was able to change the trip up slightly since he was receiving reports of humpback whale activity. The other great thing about this tour company is their boats. They are fast, clean and can change direction on a dime. This we learned when Captain Tim had to quickly manouever the boat to follow the Dall’s Purpoises and Humpback Whales.
I won’t go into great detail of the route but highlights included seeing some calving at Holgate Glacier, Dall’s Purpoises swimming alongside the boat, Sea Otters floating with their babies on their stomachs and my favourite, the Humpback Whale mother and her calf just hanging out. I could not believe how fast the time went by. Just as we got off of the boat, we spotted a Sea Otter having his dinner by the dock.
We got the shuttle bus back to our car and got a dinner recommendation from the driver. She suggested Christo’s Palace in downtown Seward so that’s where we went. We each had the special which was Cashew Crushed Halibut and it was probably in my top five meals that I have ever had. After dinner, we walked around downtown Seward checking out the various stores before heading back to Anchorage. Another great day in Alaska.
