Here is the mission statement of Hungry Heroes Hawaii:
Hungry Heroes Hawaii, a Maui-based grassroots nonprofit, is dedicated to addressing the foundational needs of food, water, and shelter for fire survivors and the hungry on Maui. Through our meal program and partnerships with local farms, we deliver nourishing meals and fresh produce with love, fostering the spirit of Aloha ‘Aina and helping individuals thrive.
When we were on Maui last December, we spent a few hours volunteering with Hungry Heroes Hawaii and because it was such a great experience, we wanted to do it again. We arrived at a local restaurant (Fond | A Neighborhood Eatery) just before 8:00am and were greeted by the volunteer co-ordinator Michelle. We had the pleasure of working with her last year so it was nice to see a familiar face. She gave us an orientation of the kitchen and explained what we would be doing today. Besides the three of us, there was a chef and two assistants to the chef.
We spent the morning chopping up zucchini, carrots and various lettuces that would be used tomorrow in making the meals. Michelle explained that much of the food is donated by local farms. Once we got all of the food prep done, it was time to clean up. Paula moved over to washing dishes while Karen and I cleaned up our workstations. When we were all done, we were fortunate enough to each get a plate of fried rice prepared by the chef to take home. There was no need to feed us but it was greatly appreciated.
After lunch, the rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing by the pool and soaking our tired bodies in the hot tub. We decided to have pizza from Dollie’s Pub & Cafe which we enjoyed on the lanai. We spent the evening doing some shopping at a couple of Whalers General and ABC Stores before ending up on the couch.
