Happy Birthday to me

Today I am 52 years old.  Alaska is a pretty nice place to spend your birthday.  The day started with Karen making breakfast and I got to open birthday cards.  The only thing that I had asked for for my birthday was to not have to empty the tanks.  And lucky for me, my wish came true.  We got the RVs packed up and it was time say to goodbye to Homer.  Before leaving town, we stopped at Two Sisters Bakery to pick up mine and Linda’s birthday cakes.  We also got a couple of sandwiches which we enjoyed at Homer Hill.

Our next stop was Seward which according to the GPS was about three and a half hours away.  The drive was full of breathtaking scenery.  I am going to run out of superlatives to describe Alaska.  We got to Soldotna and had to make a detour back to Kenai Riverfront Resort to pick up Karen’s camera which accidentally got left behind.  We stopped in at our new favourite store Fred Meyer to top up the RV (36.373 gallons @ $3.149 / gallon = $114.54 USD) and pick up a few groceries.  It was then back on the road.

We arrived in Seward just before 6:00pm.  We caught up with Steve and Linda who said that there were not too many spots left in the Seward Waterfront Park.  We drove around and managed to find three RV sites in the Resurrection North Campground that have water and electricity.  Unfortunately they are not together.  You see you can not reserve sites at this campground so it’s first come first serve.  This is true parking lot camping but the view of Resurrection Bay is what draws people here to camp.

After getting the RVs setup, we walked about fifteen minutes to downtown Seward for dinner.  I read good things about Thorn’s Showcase Lounge so that is where we went.  When you walk through the door, it is like stepping back to the 1970’s.  From the red vinyl chairs to the extensive liquor bottle displays, this place has not been touched in forty years.  One of the things they have on their menu, is something called “bucket of butt”.  It is basically a bucket of one ounce pieces of halibut.  It is fun to order a bucket of butt in a restaurant.  We had a leisurely dinner and then walked back to the RVs along the waterfront.

My birthday ended with cake and presents at Dave and Cathy’s.  Thanks to Linda, Steve, Dave, Cathy, Michael, Liam and of course Karen for making this the best birthday ever.
