We are now one week into our RV trip. And I would have to say so far, so good. Today also happens to be Linda’s birthday. We are now heading north for the second part of the trip. Unfortunately it was going to be a long driving day, at least a four and a half hours not including stops. Therefore we were on the road just before 10:00am. Steve and Linda left before the rest us since they needed to get the RV looked at back at Great Alaskan Holidays in Anchorage.
What can I say about the drive up the Seward Highway that has not already been said. It is stunning. Between the lakes and rivers and mountains, it is as if you are driving through a postcard. Once you get through Anchorage and get yourself on the Glenn Highway and then onto the Parks Highway, the scenery changes. It is more like Northern Ontario, woodsy. We all met up at the Fred Meyer in Wasilla to stock up. We will not be near grocery stores for the next few days so we wanted to make sure we had enough food.
It was another hour and a half before we arrived at Talkeetna Camper Park ($43 USD / night including taxes) in Talkeetna. We had about twenty minutes to get set up before we were getting picked up for our rafting trip. Karen timed us and it took eight minutes to get everything hooked up. Man we are getting good at this RV thing.
Matt from Denali View Raft Adventures was kind enough to pick us up at the campground for our Talkeetna River Float Trip ($75 USD / adult, $49 USD / child). Our guide was also with him but the funny thing is is that he never introduced himself so we just get on referring to him as the guide. It was about a five minute ride in the van to the launch site. We got fitted for rubber boots and were given a brief safety lesson. Dave, Cathy and the boys were at the front of the raft while Linda, Karen, Steve and I were at the back. Our guide sat in the middle on a cooler.
The reason why we choose this trip was that it was a gentle raft ride. Not no white water rafting. This was basically a float trip down the Talkeetna River. Our guide kept us entertained and educated us during the entire trip. We were on the river for two hours and we saw a couple of beaver dams, an eagle’s nest and spectacular scenery. It was raining but it was fine because we were dressed for it. The time flew by and before we knew it, there was Matt at our landing site. We got in the van and were dropped back off at the campground.
We wanted to go out to celebrate Linda’s birthday, so we walked ten minutes back into town and had dinner at West Rib Pub & Grill. I think everyone enjoyed their meals and I especially loved the burger that I had. We finished our evening with birthday cake at Dave and Cathy’s. Happy Birthday Linda.
