Yup … it’s my birthday today. Karen asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday and I said I wanted to go to the beach.
After enjoying a leisurely breakfast on the lanai, we packed up the car and headed back to the western side of the island. Today’s beach was D.T. Fleming Beach Park. when we arrived, the first thing we noticed was the colour of the water. It was a beautiful bluey green. The second thing we noticed was the monster waves. There would be no going in today. No sense in drowning on my birthday. We grabbed our chairs and found a great spot under some trees. Sitting right behind us on a dune, was this older couple who were each painting a picture of the beach. How cool is that. The normal beach activities occurred … reading, napping, eating and picture taking.
Time passes quickly when doing nothing and soon enough it was time for lunch. I wanted to have my birthday lunch back at the Aloha Mixed Plate so we packed up our stuff and made our way to Lahaina. All that I can say is that we had another fabulous meal under the canopy of trees with the warm ocean breeze. On the drive back to the condo, we stopped at a beach for a quick swim and we even got to see turtles again. During previous trips to Hawaii, we have never seen this many sea turtles.
We are lucky that at this time of the year, there is the Maui Film Festival. The best part of the festival is that they have something called the Celestial Cinema. This is where they set up a giant movie screen on one of the golf courses and they screen movies under the stars. We had so much fun last time we went, that we made a point to get tickets again this trip. Before heading to the festival, we picked up fish and chips from Eskimo Candy Seafood Market and Cafe which we enjoyed at another of Maui’s beautiful beaches.
Once we got to the central parking lot for the festival, we were quickly shuttles to the golf course where we set up our spot for the night. The movies that we saw were a short called “Broken Up” and the feature was a hilarious movie called “I Give It A Year”. There was a short intermission in which Karen and I moved to some really fancy reserved chairs that people had abadoned. There were two more shorts that I slept through and then the second feature called “Big Sur”. It was some movie about Jack Kerouac but since we were really tired, we decided to leave.
The night ended with birthday cake. A big thanks to Karen for making this a great birthday.
I saw that movie! It was pretty funny. Would have been better in Maui under the stars, though. Glad you had a good birthday.
Sounds like an awesome birthday day! I love the cupcake! Perfect ending!
