Giant waves

Around 6:00am I hear Karen getting up.  She tells me that the super moon is still visible and looks great over the water.  I never want to miss a photo opportunity like that so I grabbed my camera and headed to the lanai.  She was right … It was still pretty large and casting a lot of light.  The last few days there have been many surfers in front of the condo because of the waves.  Karen read that the surf was really good at Ho’okipa Beach so we decided that we would drive to the other side of the island to check them out.

Once we got going, it was getting close to lunch time so we decided to stop and get takeout from Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop.  But before our orders were ready, we devoured a Macnut Chocolate Pie.  We thought it was best to eat it first before it would melt at the beach.  We decided to have a picnic lunch at one of the many beaches along the highway.  Lunch tastes so much better with your toes in the sand and waves crashing in front of you.

We packed up our stuff and continued our journey.  We stopped in at Thrifty Car Rental so that we could get Karen added as an additional driver.  Dave and Cathy decided to trade in their Nissan Altima for red Jeep Wrangler.  They are going to enjoy that ion the Road to Hana.  From the airport, we stopped at Costco and Target to get various beach accessories and food.

The drive to Ho’okipa Beach took longer than expected because traffic was crawling.  When we finally got there, we were lucky to find a parking spot at the lookout.  We walked over to the guardrail and were awestruck by the size of the waves, they were huge.  What was interesting is that there were next to no surfers.  Maybe the giant waves scared them off.  We spent quite a bit of time just admiring the waves.  I personally have never seen waves that big.  We then walked down to the beach where we saw turtles sleeping in the sand.  By this time, the sun had set and it was time to go home.

This is the second night in a row that Liam has missed dinner which tonight was Chicken Ceasar Salad.  Hopefully he will join us tomorrow night.  The night ended with some down at the pool while the others went to bed.  We need to be on the road by 3:00am to catch the sunrise at Haleakala.
