From the 50th state to the 49th state

We just got back a month ago from our trip to Hawaii and now it is time again to get the suitcases out.

Our first trip to Alaska was back in June 2011.  I took my parents on an Alaskan cruise and they just loved it.  Nana still to this day talks about that trip.  We went back to Alaska in June 2015 but this time we flew into Anchorage and did day trips.  At the end of the road where we stayed was Great Alaskan Holidays which rents RV.  We vowed that the next time we come to Alaska, we will rent an RV and this will allow us to explore more.

When Karen and I decided that we would go back to Alaska this year, she posted an interest finder on Facebook.  I would say that that was more than a year ago.  Right away Dave and Cathy said they were in.  Our friends Steve and Linda also said they would love to go.  We booked the RVs in August 2017 since they were having a sale.  Now it was time to plan.  We started the detailed planning in January of this year.  We learned very early on that campgrounds, tours and fishing charters book up quickly since the season is so short in Alaska.  We finally came up with an itinerary that would give us a good taste of what Alaska has to offer.

After waiting more than a year, today is the day that the vacation starts.  I was lucky enough to get out of work by noon so I had the afternoon to do any last minute running around.  Unfortunately Karen did not get out of work until 4:00pm.  We left my house around 7:00pm and made our way to the Double Tree by Hilton Toronto Airport ($188.84 CAD including taxes, thanks Marie for booking this for us).  We dropped off our bags and then Karen, Steve, Linda and I went over to Karen’s brother’s Ross’ house.  Ross and Susie were gracious enough to let us all leave our vehicles with them.  We spent a bit of time catching up with them.  We got a text from Dave and Cathy saying that they were getting close to the hotel.  So Karen, Steve and Linda headed back while I stayed behind.  Very soon Karen returned with Dave and then Ross dropped us all off at our hotel to try and get a few hours of sleep.

Tomorrow we are going “North To Alaska”
