We have had many early mornings this week so today we planned to do nothing. By nothing, I mean we did not have any activities planned but we had some things we wanted to see.
We started our day at Alaska Wild Berry Products store where they have a twenty foot chocolate waterfall. It was hard deciding which goodies to buy but in the end I think I made the right decision. We then headed to downtown Anchorage to have lunch at Snow City Cafe. Again this was a recommendation from Jody from Alaska Photo Treks. We were able to find parking across the street from the restaurant. One thing that I have noticed is that parking is plentiful and cheap. The average is $1/hr. Karen went with lunch while I went with breakfast. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The rest of the afternoon was spent walking and shopping in downtown Anchorage.
We did not want leave downtown for dinner so we went with a TripAdvisor recommendation, Humpy’s Great Alaskan Alehouse. For our last meal in Alaska, we each went with some type of seafood … fish & chips and a crab roll. We had another great meal.
After dinner, we headed down to Ship Creek so that we could watch the fishing for King Salmon. There is salmon derby until Sunday so everyone is trying to catch the winner. The amount of fisherman increases greatly at high tide when the salmon are returning from the ocean. The locals call it “combat fishing”. The fishermen are shoulder to shoulder on the banks. Some of them even wade right into the middle of the creek. When somebody catches a fish, you have to yell “fish on” and then everyone around you reels in their line so that you do not get tangled. We only heard one person yell “fish on” and he ended up throwing the fish back.
While we were standing on the bridge watching the action, a lady told us about the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery. She said that there is a trail that you can take where you can see the salmon jumping into the waterfall. Sure enough we got there and the salmon were jumping like crazy. It was so cool to see them jumping just like you have seen on TV.
