Finishing up our time on Fogo Island

When I woke up this morning, I looked out and saw that there was going to be a sunrise.  Sometimes when we are on vacation, I like to get up early to get photos.  So just before 7:00am, Nana and I headed out.  On the road heading into Island Harbour, there is this yellow fishing shack.  I have not been able to get a picture of it that I have been happy with.  But I think today I succeeded.

Last night we were talking about how wild berries grow all over Fogo Island.  Pauline said that there were blueberries behind Gloria and Ray’s house.  So we came up with a plan that we would go picking this morning and that Dennis would make blueberry pancakes.  So Nana and Pauline grabbed a couple of popcorn buckets and we headed across the road.  I could not believe how many blueberries were in those bushes.  It only took Nana and Pauline about fifteen minutes before we had enough.  When we got back, Dennis took those blueberries and made us some fabulous pancakes.

We wanted to do more sightseeing and we were lucky because today we had tour guide Dennis with us.  We started out on the southern coast of Fogo Island.  We went to the Seldom Harbour and took a look at the fishing boats.  We stopped in at Rowe’s Grocery store to get some things we needed for tonight’s supper.  We finished up our tour of the southern coast at a lighthouse.

We stopped in at The Cod Jigger Diner to pick up some fries on our way to the northern part of the island.  Pauline and Dennis wanted us to see Sandy Cove Beach near Tilting since it is their favourite beach.

We began our trip back to the house but there were two more stops we wanted to make.  In Joe Batt’s Arm is the Fogo Island Fish Plant.  I wanted to stop here hoping to see Ray come in with today’s catch of cod.  Unfortunately he and his brother Kevin were still out trying to fill their daily 3000 pound quota.

We left the fish plant and stopped at Growlers Ice Cream.  This seasonal shop makes all of the their ice cream which highlights the flavours of Fogo Island.  I had blueberry and partridgeberry cream.  We took our ice cream and sat at a park across the street.  When we got back to the house, the rest of the afternoon was spent relaxing.

Pauline and Dennis invited Gloria, Ray and their son Adam over for a BBQ.  This was the best way to end our stay here on Fogo Island.  We had so much fun and I especially liked listening to Ray’s fishing stories.  Like the time a humpback whale was right beside his boat.  We ended the evening early since many of us have to get up early tomorrow.

I sat down in the living room and started working on the blog.  All of a sudden, the window is aglow in orange.  I head down to the water to enjoy one final Fogo Island sunset.
