We had to get back to Dublin today since we are flying home tomorrow. But there were a couple more places we wanted to check out.
As many of you know, I work for Sun Life Financial in Waterloo, Ontario. There are offices all around the world and one of them happens to be in Waterford, Ireland. While we were planning this trip, we said wouldn’t it be fun to go and visit the office. Since it was on the way back to Dublin, we decided that we would go there.
When we arrived, we started taking pictures first outside the building and then we went into the lobby. Eventually Avril O’Keeffe came to the reception window and asked if she could help. I introduced Karen and myself and then explained that we were current and former employees of Sun Life from Canada and we thought it would be fun to come and see the office. Avril asked if we would like a tour and so she took us around the building. It was very interesting to see the similarities and the differences between the Canadian and Irish offices.
It was a quick drive to the city centre and our final destination, House of Waterford. Since 1783, crystal has been manufactured in Waterford. We did not have time to do a factory tour but we did have time to check out the flagship retail store. At over 12,000 square feet, it represents the entire Waterford catalogue of luxury crystal. Everything can be found there like wine glass, candle holders, Christmas ornaments and even sports trophies. Did we buy anything? That would be a no. Too rich for me.
We left Waterford and made a quick stop in Kilkenny to do some final shopping and to enjoy one final small town in Ireland.
The drive to Dublin was supposed to take 1-1/2 hours. But because of what seemed to be rush hour traffic, it was nearly 3-1/2 hours later when we arrived at Metro Hotel & Apartments Dublin Airport. After dropping off our suitcases, we went and had supper at Little Venice Restaurant before returning the car to Alamo at the Dublin Airport. The hotel shuttle bus picked us up at 9:45pm and brought us back to the hotel. The rest of the evening was spent repacking our suitcases for tomorrow morning’s flight.
