#D&KCanada150 … Alberta edition

It has been only three weeks since we got back from Marco Island but it is time to get away for my birthday.  Last year was a big year in terms of vacations … A Mediterrean cruise for my 50th Birthday and then three weeks on Maui, we decided that we wanted to do a low key vacation.  We tossed around many ideas and then Karen came up with the idea of staying in Canada.  Since we have not spent any real time in Alberta, we thought let’s go there.  While doing the planning for this trip, WestJet just happened to have a two day sale that we could actually take advantage of.  We ended up book our flights for $457.40 CAD / person and the best part was that we were able to fly from Kitchener.  How cool is that.

I ended up taking the day off and spent it doing some final running around and just relaxing.  Once Karen was done work, I picked her up from home and we went back to my house to have something to eat.  We finished dinner and then said our goodbyes to Papa, Madison and Maui.  Nana was kind enough to drive us to the Region of Waterloo International Airport which took about twenty five minutes, darn traffic on Victoria Street.  As you approach the airport, you are struck as to how quiet it is compared to Toronto Pearson Airport.  First off, they offer ninety minutes of parking for free.  We arrived at the terminal and I think there were about five other cars dropping people off.  We grabbed our luggage and said goodbye to Nana.  You do not realize how small this airport is until you walk into the terminal.  I am sure that Nana was still driving home while Karen and I had dropped our bags, went through security and got settled at Gate 2.  Even though this is a small airport, they have big airport prices in terms of food and beverages.

At precisely 6:55pm, we begin boarding.  WestJet is very punctual.  After scanning our boarding passes and checking our identification (BTW this was the only time they asked for it), we walked out of the terminal and onto the tarmack.  We walked onto the plane and got settled for our almost four hour flight to Calgary.  We were hoping to fly over Steve and Linda’s farm in Maryhill but instead we flew over Kitchener.  I was able to recognize Fairview Park Mall and surrounding area.

Before we knew it, we arrived in Calgary at 9:45pm local time.  We got our bags and walked over to the rental car center.  We booked our car with Alamo through Costco ($329.99 CAD including taxes, 1856 kilometers driven).  Just like in Florida, we got to choose our car and we choose a beautiful blue 2017 Hyundai Sonata.  It took us about ten minutes to get to our hotel for the night.  We are staying at Hampton Inn by Hilton Calgary Airport ($126.42 CAD) because we love their beds and their hot breakfast.
