Venice Florida is known as the shark tooth capital of the world. It is about two hours north of Marco Island. The last time we went to Venice, Michael was not feeling too well so he really did not get a chance to find any shark teeth. We vowed that if we came back to Marco Island, we would go back to Venice.
It was a nice day for a drive and we got to Caspersen Beach around 1:00pm. What is nice about this beach is that they have restrooms, showers and it is very close to the parking lot. We got down to the beach and noticed that the sand was really really hot. It was more granular as opposed to the powdery sand of South Marco Beach. After setting up our blankets and umbrellas, we grabbed our shark tooth finding equipment and headed to the water’s edge.
You can tell the difference between a seasoned shark tooth collector versus an amateur collector by their equipment. The professionals use something called a Florida Snow Shovel which is a basket at the end of a long arm. We picked up a couple of kitty litter scoops to use along with a sifter that boys had in their beach toys. We basically spent the entire afternoon hunched over looking for shark teeth. Each one of us managed to find a tooth but Cathy and Michael did the best. I think between them they found over thirty teeth. I also managed to find quite a few nice shells.
We stayed there until just after 4:00pm and then we split up. The Paisley Maloneys headed back to Marco Island with a pit stop at the Miromar Outlets
The Paisley Maloneys headed back to Marco Island with a pit stop at the Miromar Outlets in Estero while Karen and I headed further north to the Ellenton Premium Outlets. We got back to the house around 10:30pm while the Paisley Maloneys were not that far behind us. A long but successful day.
