Beating the snow

The best way to celebrate your birthday is to take a trip.  Karen’s birthday is coming up so we decided on a cruise.

We headed down to Toronto yesterday afternoon for two reason.  Reason number one is that Karen’s brother Ross and his wife Susie live there and were kind enough to let us stay over and take us to the airport in the morning.  Reason number two and the most important reason is that Maui is going to stay with them.

We had an early start today since we had to be at Toronto Pearson International Airport by 5:45am for our 7:40am flight with Westjet ($705.84 CAD / person).  It only took us about twenty minutes to drop off our bags, go through customs and security.  Our flight ended up leaving an hour later which was fine with us because we had no real plans for today except for shopping.

We landed in Fort Lauderdale where the temperature was 85°F.  A much different situation than what we left behind three hours earlier.  We headed over to Hertz and picked up our 2014 Nissan Altima ($58.12 USD).

First stop was lunch at Panera Bread which we enjoyed outdoors in the beautiful sunshine.  We then made a quick stop at the Publix supermarket where we picked up water and Coke to take aboard the cruise ship.  We checked in at the Holiday Inn Fort Lauderdale North Exec Airport ($107.10 USD) before heading out for an evening of shopping.  Lucky for us Sawgrass Mills Mall was open until 11pm tonight so we were able to have a leisurely dinner at The Cheesecake Factory before hitting the stores.  After lots of walking and quite a bit of shopping, we got back to the hotel by 11pm were we crashed for the night.
