Knock knock knock … That is the sound of breakfast being delivered at 7:00am. Today we are in Costa Maya, Mexico. Unfortunately our visit to this port is short since we need to be back onboard at 1:30pm. Again while doing research for this trip, we came across the Maya Chan Beach Resort ($59 USD / person). We read that they only take so many guests and the reviews of this place made us want to give them a try. Marie was kind enough to book this and actually our entire party of sixteen decided to come along.
We had to be at our designated meeting place at 7:45am. It was outside of the cruise port and it was a bit of a hike to get there. We noticed quite a few nice shops as we were walking through the cruise port. Because there were so many of us, they had to get two taxis. Now I thought the roads on Roatan were bad yesterday. But they have nothing on the roads we drove today to get to the resort. I felt like I was inside a pinball machine. After about a half an hour drive, we were all very grateful to get there.
As we entered the resort, we were given a warm welcome. The staff gave us a few instructions like where the lockers, bathrooms and water toys (kayaks and stand up paddle boards) were and then they let us know that it was all you can eat and drink. I forgot about that part. They took us over to where our spot would be for the day. You see the resort only takes up to 104 people and it sells out most days. Because they only take a limited number of people, it is not crowded and everyone gets a spot. Our spot was a huge grass hut that had many chairs and tables, a couple of loungers and hammocks and a big bed. Once we got settled, the staff came around with chips, salsa, guacamole and proceeded to take drink orders.
It was such a relaxing way to spend the morning. Everyone did something different … Napping, reading, eating, drinking, playing in the sand, tanning, etc. It was laid back and just what I needed. I can not say enough about the staff. They are very attentive. If they noticed your glass was empty, they would immediately ask if you would like something. At around 11:00am, they served tacos which were all prepared from scratch including the tortillas.
Before you know it, it was time for us to leave. I think everyone was very sad to leave. The ride back to the port was just as much fun as the ride there. Lucky for us, the taxi could take us right into the port saving us some precious time. We had just under an hour to check out a few of the shops before getting back onboard.
The rest of the afternoon was spent doing more of what we did in the morning … Napping, relaxing and reading. We did not see anything that we wanted on the menu, so we grabbed burgers from Guy’s Burgers. Between getting up early and all the sun we got, everyone decided to have a quiet night in.
