Another beautiful drive

Last night we checked the weather for the next couple of days because there are two drives that we want to do before we leave Canmore.  It looks like Tuesday is going to be a better day so we are going to leave Yoho National Park for then.  Therefore we decided to do the Kananaskis Wildlife Drive today.  We made sure to pack sandwiches and snacks because we were not sure if there was any amenities along the route.

The drive starts at Highway 40 just off of the Trans-Canada Highway.  It does not take long before you are driving past mountain peaks, wilderness and lakes.  The area has three provincial parks, many campgrounds and lots of day use areas.

The first part of the drive is on a paved road.  I can not remember all of the places we stopped but some highlights were Kananaskis Village and Upper Kananaskis Lake where we had lunch.

Instead of going back up Highway 40, we instead took Highway 742 which is also known as the Smith Dorrien Trail.  This road is sixty-five kilometres and takes you back to Canmore through some picturesque scenery.  However it is a dusty gravel road with washboards and potholes.

We got lucky on this road because we saw our first bear of the trip.  What was unusual was that he was blonde.  He did not have a hump so we think it was a black bear.

After the bear sighting, we continued and made a few more stops including Spray Lakes Reservoir.

Just before we got back on the paved road, we came across a group of mountain goats on the road.

We got back to Canmore and picked up dinner from Rocket Pie which we enjoyed back at the condo.
