Nana and I both had a good sleep last night. It is so quiet here at Whispering Wind Cove Cottages. We got up around 7:30am and decided to have breakfast before heading back to bed. The plan for today was to drive around and explore the Twillingate area. But first, I headed to the office and settled up the bill with Pat. We had a good laugh over the fact that I ran into her brother yesterday at the airport in Toronto. Before we left, we walked around the property and Pat was kind enough to let us have a peak into the Tiny House Cottage.
Our first real stop was Long Point Lighthouse which is at the very top of Twillingate Island. The lighthouse sits 300 feet above sea level and the view of the Atlantic Ocean is stunning.
Once we got back into Twillingate, we made a few stops at some stores so that Nana could start her magnet collection from Newfoundland.
By now it was lunch time and we were hungry. So we decided to have lunch at Great Auk Winery. Nana had the French Onion soup while I had the Turkey Dinner Sandwich. But we both left some room so that we could enjoy Dat’s My Jam (partridgeberry) Touton Bites for dessert. Yummy.
Nana was tired so I dropped her off at the cottage while I did some more exploring. I got back just after 3:00pm and started working on the blog.
Since we only had one supper in Twillingate, there was much deliberation as to where we should go. But the choice was made for us when we found out that Doyle Sansome & Sons were no longer serving lobster. So it was off to Annie’s Harbour Restaurant where we both had our first seafood meal. Nana went with the fish and chips while I had Annie’s Fish Tacos. Before we went back to the cottage, we stopped by Wild Cove Beach. We walked down to the water which surprising was not cold at all.
When Karen and I were here two years ago, we went to The Grand Old Shed Party Show and had such a great time. I knew that Nana needed to experience this. The show runs during the summer on Friday and Sunday evenings. So when I was planning this trip, I made sure that we were in Twillingate on one of those days.
After paying our admission ($20 CAD / person), we were instructed to pick out a hat and a musical instrument. Because Nana and I were one of the first people there, we each got an ugly stick. If you don’t know what an ugly stick is, it’s a traditional Newfoundland musical instrument. They are made with broom handles, bottle caps and other household items. We found our seats (third row) and watched as this garage (aka the shed) began to fill up.
The show is hosted by Karren Churchill and Gillian Cutler, a very talented mother/daughter duo. For two hours, you are entertained with lots of music and laughter. But what makes the show so much fun, is the audience participation.
During the intermission, I was lucky enough to meet Ernest Barnes who is better known as The Pothole Man. He received that name due to the fact that for many summers, Ernest would mark the potholes with orange spray paint. He covered an area from Twillingate to Lewisporte. This was something that Ernest did voluntarily to keep drivers safe. He told me that one year he went through 113 cans of paint.
The second half of the show was just as much fun and the show ended with everyone dancing in a giant circle. I can highly recommend The Grand Old Shed Party Show. It even got Nana’s approval.
It was after 10:00pm, when we got back to the cottage. We have to be up very early tomorrow so it was off to bed.
